Description: This handmade mezzaluna shows are John Leitch's work at its best. Mezzaluna, meaning "half-moon" in Italian, are chopping knives typically used for herbs, spices, garlic, and the like. The knife and its attending recessed cutting board is extremely effective as well as dramatic.
The ATS-34 stainless steel blade was heat treated by Paul Bos to Rc 59 and will have exceptional edge holding. Leitch is well known for his deeply acid etched blades. The etching is both visually exciting and provides a surface that resists sticking to the food being chopped.
The handle is formed from cocobolo. This resinous relative of rosewood holds up exceptionally well under the harsh kitchen environment. A brass bolster and mosaic pins finish out the comfortably sculpted handle.
This mezzaluna is accompanied by both a cocobolo chopping bowl, which conveniently displays the knife, but also a presentation chopping bowl that is sure to be the highlight of any kitchen. The presentation bowl is turned from Oregon burl.
Exceptional work throughout!
