Description: Michael Rader, who was honored as a journeyman smith in 2006, is best known for creating dramatic swords and daggers with woodwork that is beyond compare. When he began creating chef's knives a few years back, the results were exceptional.
Slicing knives are great general-purpose utility knives for tasks around the kitchen. The slender blade makes it very useful and versatile from slicing fruit, vegetables, and meats, to chopping garlic.
The slender blade was forged from 52100 carbon steel. Many knifemakers and collectors feel that this steel is among the best steels currently used for knives due to its exceptional edge holding and sharpness. The bolster is forged from damascus that was forge welded to the carbon steel blade. Like his hunting knives, this utility knife was pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly.
The blade was heat treated using a traditional Japanese technique whereby the spine was coated in clay prior to quenching. This results in a soft, supportive spine and a hard, long lasting edge. The gently undulating transition line between the soft spine and the hard edge is called a hamon. A triple quench results in truly exceptional edge holding. Michael created this slicer with a particularly thin, high performance blade. It will be an amazing slicer!
The handle is formed from curly koa and box elder burl. Black fiber and copper spacers alternate. By incorporating black fiber spacers, this handle will more easily adjust to temperature and humidity changes over time. Stabilized woods combine the beauty of natural wood with durability. The knife has perfect balance and feels exceptional in the hand.
