Description: Carving sets are all about the ritual of carving and slicing hams and birds for the holidays. It is one of the few knives that we use at the table -- in front of our guests. Roger Bergh has created a unique and dramatic carving set that is sure to please. This exquisite example of his work has been in a single private collection since it was made. It has never been used to cut and has not been sharpened since Roger made it. By all appearances, it could have been made it yesterday.
The handles of this carving set are truly unique. Roger used Narwhal (Monodon monoceros) tusk recovered from an antique for the main handle. Narwhal is the origin of unicorn horn legends. The long spiraling tusks are truly majestic. Dark striations follow the natural spiraling of the tusk. The end caps on both pieces are graced with mammoth ivory, while the carving knife features a walrus ivory 'bolster' with nickel silver spacers.
The damascus blade is forged to shape from carbon steels and will have exceptional edge holding. The twist pattern damascus reiterates the spiraling flow of the tusk. The cool steel tones echo the arctic ideations, bringing to mind the cold artic winds on the ice pack.
Roger Bergh creates knives that have a timelessness about them that is rarely found in other makers' work. By using exotic and hard to find materials, he creates works that are immediately recognizable as his creations. Truly a stunning piece from a remarkable bladesmith.
