Description: Journeyman smith David Lisch is an exceptional knifemaker located in Seattle, WA. As well as being a bladesmith, David is a renowned blacksmith, and teacher of knifemaking at the Studio 4 school, which he runs. David's control over damascus, as shown in this dramatic chef's knife, is exceptional. His control and skill produces patterns that are uncompromisingly clean and controlled. He created this chef's knife combining presentation grade curly koa and his own laddered W's damascus.
The 9 3/4 inch long damascus blade is forged from a laddered W's pattern that is highly complex and immediately grabs attention. The blade is forged to shape, resulting in optimal grain structure and durability. The blade is slightly heavier than most Japanese blades, but lighter than their German counterparts -- a nice balance between performance and strength. At 1.85 inches in height, it is a great choice either as a slicing knife or as a general purpose chefs knife used for rocking chop.
The handle, which combines Western and Japanese influences, is formed from a single piece of presentation grade curly koa. The wood has a dramatic, fine curl with a chatoyant effect that results in a changing pattern when turned in the light. It swells at the palm and again toward the pommel for a comfortable grip. The ferrule is hand hammer finished naval bronze. This material is highly valued by mariners for its notable corrosion resistance. The warm gold tones are handsomely complementary to the stunning koa and damascus.
Fantastic fit and finish -- David is clearly a maker to watch for his culinary knives!
