Don Nguyen is a full-time Materials Science and Engineering student at the University of Arizona. Knifemaking is something that he does in his spare time -- though it is clear that he is a maker to watch. He is clearly driven by a design sense that is rarely found. He designs and creates world-class kitchen tools using modern materials and techniques, finishing each detail by hand in his one-man workshop.
The blade is formed from 52100 carbon steel -- a steel that many knifemakers and users feel to be the best choice, highest performing steel currently used to make knives. The slender blade features a meticulously rounded spine and choil. Both the blade and tang are distal tapered for optimal balance.
The handle is formed from African sapele wood with black G-10 underlayment. The angular lines are both visually appealing and extremely comfortable. The shape allows for a wide range of grips and encourages a pinch grip for optimal control. By using stabilized wood and G-10 to form the handle, Nguyen ensures this knife will perform well in either a home or commercial kitchen.
