Description: Mastersmith Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, Andrew has a design sense that is beyond compare. Andrew has well deservedly won numerous awards for his knives.
A unique knife at first sight, the handle is made from hand textured mild steel. The pivot is created from Andrew's own basketweave pattern damascus. Ancient mammoth ivory inlays are set into each side of the knife. Both scales feature detailed images of frogs resting on lillypads. Each frog is meticulously detailed in 24k gold. The textured surface of the water creates the impression of a pond with wind blowing across the surface. Andrew's engraving is done using a traditional Japanese technique using hammer and chisel rather than a motorized scribe. A hidden compartment at the back of the handle reveals a tadpole swimming in the water -- carved in pure silver. The steel scales are set on 308 stainless steel liners, which in turn surround the domed backbar. The backbar is inlaid with five faceted peridot gemstones.
The blade shows tremendous skill at the forge. Andrew combined 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels into a beautiful twisted Ws pattern damascus. Each side features a fully set just below the raised clip. The blade is easily opened using the right handed thumb stud (created from forge-welded cable). Andrew's mark is set on the left ricasso -- also in 24k gold.
This is an amazing work of art and tremendously inspiring! Words cannot do this knife justice. It is clear why Andrew Meers has quickly become among my favorite makers -- and is winning so many accolades!
