A Useful Work of Art (8/4/2009)
Does anyone need a $340 fruit knife? Of course not. You can cut things with a ten dollar knife and for $90 you can have as good a knife as most people could ever imagine. And by the way, does anybody “need” a house with more than two bathrooms or a car with more than four cylinders or a wedding ring made of pure gold when 14 ct. is so much cheaper? Of course not. But there’s more to good living than economy and frugality. Sometimes we need to indulge ourselves beyond bare function to harvest the pleasure that comes with quality. So what do you get when you buy this knife?
First of all you get superb function. I’ve used mine for several months now. I cut tomatoes, avocados, apples, onions and other stuff that I throw in my salads. It cuts beautifully, even with soft tomatoes. No slipping. No pushing and smashing. It holds its edge and sharpens easily.
But here’s what really matters: it just makes me feel so good to use this exquisite damascus blade that has been crafted to such high standards of fit and finish. It elevates a simple kitchen task to a pleasurable event. I like holding it because it feels so right. I love looking at it because it is beautiful. It raises my spirits every time I touch it. It makes me feel good to rinse it and wipe it clean after every use even though it's stainless and isn’t supposed to rust. The care that went into the making inspires me to maintain it.
If what I’ve just written sounds flakey to you and makes no sense, then obviously you shouldn’t buy a knife like this. Save your money and be happy with that midnight special on TV. But if what I’ve written resonates, then you won’t be disappointed with this little gem.
