Bladesmith Micah Dunn at his workshop

Micah Dunn (b. 1987) of MD Edgeworks crafts knives that are more than tools — they are works of precision, artistry, and purpose. Each blade balances function and beauty, designed to perform flawlessly in the kitchen, on the hunt, or in everyday use. From forged damascus steel to hand-fitted handles, his knives combine durability with distinctive patterns and finishes that make each piece unique. Every edge, bevel, and handle tells the story of a craftsman committed to excellence, meticulous fit and finish, and a seamless blend of tradition and innovation.

Born in Galveston, Texas, and raised in Mansfield, Louisiana, Micah is an artist at heart, drawn to shaping metal into functional pieces of art that will be treasured for generations. Focused primarily on culinary knives, he draws inspiration from the joy he feels when creating meals for his family.
He recognizes the influence of his father’s journey from city garbage collector to city clerk, a path balanced with ministry work. He also credits his mother’s dedication to her childcare business. “The work itself didn’t make me a knifemaker, but the ethic of doing your best and providing for family certainly did,” Micah explains. That same ethic remains at the heart of everything he does today.

Micah’s fascination with building and understanding how things work began early. Visits to his grandfather’s workshop exposed him to welding and engine repairs firsthand. Encouraged to be curious, he started tinkering and creating from a young age. This passion continued through high school ag shop classes and his participation in the FFA (Future Farmers of America). “Metal shop always called to me,” Micah recalls. “When it was time to go into the workforce, I knew college wasn’t for me. I figured I might as well start welding. I had always wanted to weld and enjoyed it. That’s what I do now for my day job.

Around 2019, Micah began exploring artistic blacksmithing. He built his first forge, completing it at the start of 2020, just as COVID-19 began. During the shutdown, he made his first knives. He started with two, and three more orders soon followed. “I thought, well, I guess this is going to be our supplemental income,” he says. His welding background proved invaluable. “For one thing, I could make my own tools. Ninety percent of the tools I use are ones I made. Being able to modify machines and build fixtures gave me a huge advantage and kept startup costs low.”

Primarily self-taught, Micah credits YouTube, Instagram, and the generosity of the knifemaking community for accelerating his learning. Joining the Texas Knifemakers Guild in 2022 had a major impact. Attending hammer-ins and connecting with fellow smiths, he says, “took my skills far beyond what they would’ve been just by watching someone do something and trying to replicate it. It was better than almost any class.”

Since 2017, Mike has lived in Stephenville, Texas with his wife and three sons (b. 2011, 2013, and 2017). Micah has established himself as both a craftsman and a teacher. He spends around thirty hours a week in the shop, balancing forging and stock-removal work. His damascus steel is forged in-house, and he enjoys manipulating it to create unique patterns. “The forging process — moving the steel and getting it to do what you want — is the most challenging part,” he says. “It’s also the most rewarding and fun part.” Micah is especially fascinated by pattern development, noting that stretching damascus patterns can make the same steel appear entirely different.

Micah’s work spans culinary, hunting, and farm knives, with a particular passion for chef’s knives. “Knowing that the knives I’m making are going to people and feeding their families daily is such a rewarding thought. It makes me happy,” he says. Even with artistic or sculptural projects, functionality remains paramount. “A knife can be an art piece, but if it can’t perform its tasks, what’s the point?”

Recognition has followed. Micah’s culinary knives have earned a Best Chef Knife Award at the Natural State Knife Show and a win in a YouTube challenge. He competed in all three seasons of Last Blade Standing, winning the season two competition.

Teaching is a natural extension of Micah’s approach. Spurred by interest at local markets and community events, he offers knifemaking instruction, passing on the technical skills and values that define his work. He produces around fifty knives a year, but jokes that he stopped counting because “the anxiety of the numbers was driving me crazy.”

Outside the shop, Micah enjoys music, drawing, and video games with his family. “My boys are at a great age to hang out with. I love living life with them.” His musical taste is wide-ranging, from country and church songs to rock, R&B, and hip-hop, reflecting his lifelong artistic curiosity.
Looking ahead, Micah hopes to balance his craft with family life while exploring more artistic blacksmithing projects, such as sculptural hammers and intricate designs. He envisions MD Edgeworks as more than just a brand. “I’d like to be known as a good man who was good for my family and customers. If people say, ‘Micah is a great dude and he took care of me,’ that’s more important than fame.

With humility, passion, and a commitment to growth, Micah Dunn embodies the spirit of a craftsman in motion — building, refining, teaching, and learning. Each MD Edgeworks knife reflects his dedication, skill, and heart, fusing artistry, function, and legacy. Whether feeding a family, preparing a gourmet meal, or passing from one generation to the next, every blade carries the integrity and vision of its maker, ensuring it is not just used, but treasured.
