Description: I was very excited when I first got a look at Ben Akin's knives. Ben is a custom knifemaker from Washington State. His knives are exceptionally well designed and tested. His attention to detail is clearly evident in each of his creations. He is a member of the American Bladesmith Society, the Idaho Knife Association, The Oregon Knife Collectors Association, and the Montana Knifemakers Association. He both forges and stock removes his knives.
This chef's knife is a perfect choice for the cook that prefers a knife with more reach. Despite its large size, the 10-3/4 inch blade and tang are distal tapered, ensuring that knife is easy to maneuver and has perfect balance. Whether slicing, dicing, or chopping, this hand forged chef's knife will make easy work of the task. It is sure to become a kitchen favorite.
The blade is hand forged 52100 carbon steel. This high performing steel is considered to be among the best steels (if not the very best) by many knifemakers and knife users. Makers such as Mastersmiths Bill Burke, Bob Kramer, and Ed Fowler have pioneered this long edge holding steel. The blade features a forged finish by the spine and a hand rubbed satin finish in the grinds. Ben's maker mark is on the left side. An edge quench combines a keen, long lasting edge with a softer, supportive spine.
The handle is presentation grade Arizona desert ironwood set to a full distal tapered tang. Desert ironwood (Olneya tesota) is a rare wood that is only found in the valleys of the Sonoran Desert below 2,500 foot elevation. It is among the most desirable of exotic woods used for knives. This dense wood is both dramatic and has tremendous stability. Mosaic pins adds a bit of decoration. The handle is contoured to provide a comfortable and secure grip.
The knife is accompanied by a custom, hand tooled leather sleeve by Cindy Akin Leathercrafts, Ben's wife. It is made from premium Hermann Oak veg-tanned leather and stitched with Ritza Tiger Thread to last a lifetime.
Nice work throughout!
