Description: Journeyman Smith Luiz Gustavo Gonçalves is among the greatest Brazilian bladesmiths alive today. He is a protégé of Eduardo Berardo. His work, which has won numerous awards, clearly speaks for itself. This is easily the most dramatic Meat Cleaver that I have ever encountered.
This integral meat cleaver was hand forged from L Gustavo's own Turkish Twist damascus. Eleven bars of opposing twist pattern damascus were combined to create this dramatic pattern. Gustavo's maker's mark and JS are inlaid in 24k gold into the left side of the blade. The damascus pattern moves seamlessly into the integral damascus bolster. Creating integral knives takes a particularly talented bladesmith and L Gustavo is clearly up to the task. The bolsters are inlaid, overlaid, and engraved with gold leaves and branches.
The hand sculpted handle is jet black African blackwood. It is meticulously contoured for a comfortable, secure grip and meets seamlessly with the dramatic integral bolster. Creating a curved join like this is another example of Luiz' exceptional skills.
This is a truly majestic meat cleaver and is sure to be the highlight of most any collection.
