Description: Phil Baldwin was an accomplished bladesmith and blacksmith out of Washington State, living in the Puget Sound area since 1983. He conducted numerous workshops around the nation at leading craft schools: Penland, Oregon School of Arts and Crafts, Arrowmont School of Crafts, Alfred University and at prominent national and regional conferences: ABANA, SNAG, New England Blademakers’ Guild, and the Northwest Blacksmith Association. He was arguably most known for his accomplishments with mokume-gane as a result of his participation in a two-year research project on the Japanese precious metal patterning process. At his graduate school, Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, Baldwin is known as an authority on the topic, as well as recognized as a producer of the exotic laminated metals for other artists through his company, Shining Wave Metals founded in 1983. Unfortunately, Phil passed away in August of 2023. This Damascus Carving Set was made in 1982 and kept in a private collection. It is in near mint condition and does not appear to have been ever used.
The fork and blade are matching heat colored damascus, forged from carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The blade is a san mai, with the damascus surrounding a carbon steel core. Both the fork and blade culminate in integral carved bolsters. Handle scales are carved rosewood set with silver pins. They are surrounded by antiqued mokume gane spacers. The distal tapered full tangs are hand fileworked.
The carving set is accompanied by a hand built padauk wood box with a sliding cover.
Exceptional work throughout from one of the greats! It is exceptionally rare to find Phil Baldwin’s work these days.
