Description: This exceptional utility knife is the work of Kentucky bladesmith Joshua Fisher. Joshua is a full time knifemaker and a Forged in Fire champion (season 8, episode 23). He started making knives when he was 22 years old. He liked the idea of being able to take raw materials and make a functional tool that can be used every day. Joshua was honored to work with Wounded Warrior Project teaching veterans how to make knives, tomahawks, and other tools -- providing a unique experience and outlet for the veterans.
A utility knife is between a chef’s knife and a paring knife. This makes it perfect for a multitude of tasks where more precise cuts are needed, such as trimming broccoli, green beans, or other smaller vegetables. Some cooks like to use it in their hand, too—almost like a large paring knife. Others like its smaller size as an alternative to the chef’s knife. Utility knives are sometimes called sandwich knives because they work well on almost everything that goes into a sandwich—from thin-skinned vegetables such as tomatoes, to meats and cheeses.
The blade is hand ground Copper San Mai forged by Baker Forge. Copper damascus cladding is combined with a Nitro-V stainless steel core. Nitro-V is a martensitic stainless steel with a chromium-based composition created by the New Jersey Steel Baron company. Nitrogen and vanadium have been added to the composition of AEB-L to improve edge performance. The resulting blade has an extremely keen, long-lasting edge and is just as tough or tougher than similar carbon steels while being completely stainless.
Vintage Westinghouse Micarta handle scales are set on the full tang for strength and durability. This Micarta was developed in 1910 by Westinghouse Electric Corporation as an industrial thermo-set laminate for electrical insulation. This Micarta was lost in a warehouse and only recently discovered. The vintage laminated handle material shows unique aging lines. It provides a durable grip that doesn't easily become slippery. Torx screws secure the handle scales in place which allow them to be removed if cleaning or maintenance is needed.
Exceptional work throughout!
