Description: Gabe Fletcher is a man of many crafts, always busy with a guitar pick, hammer, paintbrush, or blade in hand. Originally from Vermont and raised in Alaska, Gabe feels a deep connection to nature, where he enjoys hunting, fishing, and processing wild game in traditional ways. This lifestyle nurtured his lifelong appreciation for edged tools. Mentors such as Neil Kamimura, Spenser Sandison, Mareko Maumasi, Salem Straub, and others have helped him along the way. In 2022, Gabe launched Anchorage Forge, run within the same building he runs his brewery.
The 9-3/4 inch damascus blade was forged from Gabe's own mosaic damascus, combining 1080 and 15N20 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The pattern is high contrast and extremely engaging, showing lots of movement within the steel. At 2-1/2 inches tall, this knife has lots of finger clearance over a cutting board ensuring it will last many sharpenings. Gabe's touchmark is on the right side of the blade. We recommend using camellia oil to protect the blade and natural wood handle.
The bolster is integral to the blade with the damascus pattern flowing uninterrupted. Creating an integral bolster in a custom setting requires a particularly talented smith.
The handle is curly koa wood, brought to a high polish. This durable wood is only found on the Hawaiian islands and is one of the most desired woods used in knifemaking. The handle is inspired by the Japanese ambidextrous octagonal handle which provides a comfortable grip even after many hours of use. A large carbon fiber spacer separates the handle from the bolster. Like other knives, this knife should not be put in the dishwasher.
Excellent work throughout!
