Description: Bladesmith Kevin Slattery hails from Australia. I was very excited when Mastersmith Bill Burk introduced me to his work back in 2018. His work has continued to develop and refine over the years and he is clearly a maker to watch.
This high performance chef's knife is a perfect choice as a primary knife in the kitchen. The blade is well suited for slicing vegetables, meats, and more. The gentle arc of the cutting edge is perfect for a rocking, chopping motion with plenty of finger clearance over a cutting board. At 6-2/3 inches, this knife is extremely light and nimble.
The blade is forged from W2 carbon steel to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The spine and choil are nicely rounded for comfort. Kevin's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
The blade features a revolutionary technique that Kevin has developed called Hamon Art. Both sides of the blade feature images of flowers and bees. These were created by creating a detailed hamon (differential heat treatment) in the form of the images, rather than just a surface technique. The results of this new technique are exceptionally dramatic. Both the images and Kevin’s maker mark were created using this technique.
The Japanese-inspired oval handle combines Tasmanian blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) with a curly mango spacer. This dramatic wood is an Acacia species native in south eastern Australia. It has a dramatic figure similar to curly koa, combined with excellent stability. The handle nicely accommodates a comfortable pinch grip. This is a knife you won't want to put down. Like other knives, this knife should not be put in the dishwasher.
Excellent work throughout!
