Description: Mareko Maumasi is well known for his exceptional high end kitchen knives. He worked for years with Mastersmith Bob Kramer and Mastersmith David Lisch. Given this, it is no surprise that his understanding of kitchen knives, as well as insight into working with steel, is exceptional. This stunning chef knife was kept in a private collection since it was made. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances, Mareko could have made it yesterday!
Mareko's Arctic Coastline Damascus combines damascus cladding forged from 1084 and 15N20 with a core steel of 1084 carbon steel. This provides a high contrast blade with excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The core steel was etched to a jet black to provide some limited rust resistance and extra contrast. The pattern is reminiscent of arctic waters meeting with the icy glacier coastline where the pattern derives its name. The choil has been nicely rounded for comfort. Mareko's touchmark is engraved on the right side of the blade.
The bolster is integral to the blade with the damascus pattern flowing uninterrupted from bolster to blade. Creating an integral bolster in a custom setting requires a particularly talented smith.
The Japanese-inspired handle is sculpted from flame torched Pappy Van Winkle whiskey oak barrel. Pappy Van Winkle is a highly sought-after and expensive line of Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, known for its exceptional quality and limited production. It's produced by the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery but distilled and bottled at Buffalo Trace Distillery. The brand is named after Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr., who was a prominent figure in the bourbon industry and a champion of quality and tradition. The oak is torched for a blackened appearance. A maple burl spacer nicely complements the handle.
To keep the knife safe during storage, a matching oak barrel saya with copper rivets is included. A moose antler retention pin locks the knife safely in place.
Excellent work throughout!
