Description: Ed Schempp's knives are as cherished as they are hard to find. Ed is well known as a master of mosaic damascus steel. He started making knives back in 1991 after attending the OKCA show in Eugene, Oregon. Stock removal turned into forging, forging turned into damascus, and damascus soon became mosaic damascus. Schempp was at the forefront of developing complex mosaic damascus in the late 1990s. These days, his knives are extremely hard to find on the secondary market. He has done many designs for Spyderco that have been famous worldwide. This California Carver was kept in a single private collection since it was made in the spring of 2007. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances, Ed could have made it yesterday!
The blade is Ed's own multi-bar mosaic damascus forged from carbon steel. A bold twist pattern forged from 15N20 and 1084 carbon steels creates the edge. Six flower tiles forged from 15N20, 1080, O1, 4600E and 1084 carbon steel make the spine. The blade was forged to shape with the edge bar curving toward the tip. The resulting pattern is extremely engaging.
The handle is Arizona desert ironwood, sculpted to provide a comfortable grip. Finger grooves and a damascus guard prevent your hand from sliding over the blade. A central mosaic pin completes the handle. This elegant carving knife will be equally comfortable in a private collection or as a centerpiece for the holiday dinners.
Excellent work throughout!
