Knifemaker Jonny Kable at the ForgeSouth African bladesmith Jonny Kable creates all knives of knives – from biltong knives, chef’s knives, subhilt fighters, to daggers and folders. You name it, he can do it – and to perfection!

He uses both conventional steels and damascus he forges himself. His work is inspired by some of the great knifemakers – Bob Loveless, Ron Lake, etc. He has become one of the best makers of Loveless style knives in South Africa.

Jonny took the American Bladesmith Society class, Introduction to Bladesmithing, under Mastersmiths Heather and Kevin Harvey. He hopes to test of ABS journeyman smith in the next year or two. He was so inspired by this course, that he also took their Damascus Forging class, and an Advanced Damascus course with Bladesmith Henning Wilkinson.

Kable forges his high performance knives in a workshop at his home in Port Elizabeth. He built his own forge, hydraulic press, and is currently building a pneumatic hammer.

Jonny, who was born in 1955, took up knifemaking after he retired from his engineering business. Over the past 10 years, he has caught the knifemaking bug. As he told me, "Making knives is really all I want to do ... I'm constantly learning and improving my skills." He is happiest when he’s in his workshop making a knife, which is why knifemaking is his chosen profession in his retirement years.
