Description: This exceptional damascus chef's knife was made by Ohio bladesmith Justin Chenault. Justin started making knives in 2005. Chenault's first foray into smithing was in a high school class where he was tasked with forging a hatchet for camping. After graduating high school Justin assembled the basics of his own blacksmith's shop. He quickly joined the Southern Ohio Forge Associate (SOFA) which helped him connect with other smiths. Justin is a journeyman smith with the American Bladesmith Society. He won Season 7, Episode 6 of Forged in Fire, proving his skills on national television.
This high performance chef's knife is a perfect choice as a primary knife in the kitchen. The 9-1/2 inch blade is easily controlled, while the extra-tall blade gives plenty of finger clearance over a cutting board. From chopping to slicing, this will be your go-to knife.
The broad, spearpoint blade was forged to shape from 1095 carbon steel. By using carbon steel, Justin ensures a keen, long lasting edge. Chenault borrowed a heat treating technique from the world of Japanese swords. Prior to quenching, the spine was coating in clay. This creates a softer, resilient spine with an ultra hard cutting edge. The undulating line traveling across the blade shows the transition between the supportive spine and hard cutting edge. Chenault's maker's mark is on the left side.
The handle is stabilized amboyna burl. This East Asian presentation grade wood has a tremendous, swirling figure with a pleasing warm tone. A copper pin highlights warm tones in the wood. Mokume gane bolsters are dovetailed to the wood handle scales for a perfect fit. The mokume is hand forged from brass and copper.
This exceptional chef's knife is sure to become a family heirloom. Exceptional work throughout!
