Description: This knife is a collaboration between Mareko (Mark) Maumasi and Journeyman Smith David Lisch. It is, quite honestly, one of the more exciting chef's knives that I have ever seen. Mark worked for years with Mastersmith Bob Kramer. It is no surprise that his understanding of kitchen knives as well as insight into working with steel is exceptional. His moniker is Maumasi Firearts. Journeyman smith David Lisch is an knifemaker located in Seattle, WA. Over the last year, David has been focusing increasingly more attention on chef's knives and he is clearly becoming a maker to watch in this area. As well as being a bladesmith, David is a renowned blacksmith, and teacher of knifemaking at the Studio 4 school, which he runs. David's control over damascus, as shown in this dramatic chef's knife, is amazing. His control and skill produces patterns that are uncompromisingly clean and controlled.
David created the complex damascus and forged the blade to shape. The blade and bolster are all made from one solid piece of damascus. Though integral knives are regularly done in production work, creating an integral bolster in a custom setting is extremely difficult and shows the maker's skill at its best.
The handle is formed from a single piece big leaf maple burl. The workmanship is beautiful, and the wood chosen is gorgeous! Stark contrast between the light and dark aspects are stunning. Contours ensure a comfortable and safe grip. Alternating cooper nickel and micarta spacers set between the handle and integral bolster assist the wood to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. Cooper nickel brings in warm tones, but does not tarnish like copper and brass.
A gorgeous piece built for serious use, yet one of the more dramatic kitchen knives that I have come across.
