Description: Mark Mostert is an exceptional bladesmtih from South Africa. He started making knives part time in 2019 and presented his work for the first time at the 2020 Brooklyn Knife Show in Pretoria, South Africa. From the start, damascus caught his eye and he began a never-ending quest for information surrounding damascus and forging. As time went by, he started experimenting and is one of a very small group of bladesmiths in the world capable of making copper san mai. Mostert brings skills that are far beyond the number of years that he has been forging. His work is currently significantly underpriced and I anticipate him gaining a significant international reputation.
The san mai blade combines the easier maintenance of stainless steel sides with a damascus core forged from 1085 and 15n20 carbon steels. The resulting combination is extremely dramatic and high performance. A thin nickel layer helps prevent carbon migration. The blade features an S-Grind. A convex ground edge provides high performance chopping with lots of strength. From there, it moves into a hollow as the blade moves toward the spine. This technique lightens the overall weight without sacrificing strength. The combination ensures a high performing workhorse with less resistance cutting through foods that would otherwise stick or wedge. Both the spine and choil are nicely rounded for comfort. Mostert's maker mark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle is ringed gidgee (Acacia cambagei). Gidgee is an exceptional wood for knife handles and is considered to be one of Australia's most beautiful timbers. It has tremendous stability even when exposed to fluctuations in humidity and temperature. It is among the densest woods in the world and has a beautiful curl similar to Hawaiian koa. The handle meets perfectly with the antique finished bronze bolster. It provides a comfortable, ambidextrous grip. This is a knife you won't want to put down -- it is sure to become a kitchen favorite.!
Excellent work throughout!
